How to register your address at the Bürgeramt – one of the first and most important steps after arriving in Germany.
The Anmeldung (address registration) is a legal requirement in Germany. Every person who moves to a new address must register at their local Bürgeramt (citizen's office) within 14 days of moving in. This applies to everyone: German citizens, EU nationals, and non-EU residents alike.

You can register at any Bürgeramt in Berlin – it does not have to be in your district. Here are some of the larger offices with more appointment availability:
Pro tip: If your nearest Bürgeramt has no available appointments, try offices in other districts. Bürgerämter in Spandau, Reinickendorf, or Marzahn often have earlier availability than central locations.
Walk-in appointments at Bürgeramt offices are extremely rare. You must book in advance.
Visit service.berlin.de and search for “Anmeldung einer Wohnung”. Select your preferred Bürgeramt and choose an available time slot. Appointments are released approximately 2 weeks in advance.
Call the Berlin citizen hotline at 115 (available Mon–Fri, 7:00–18:00). The operators can book an appointment for you in German or English.
The Anmeldung appointment is quick and straightforward. Here is what to expect:
The entire process takes about 10–15 minutes and is completely free of charge.
Language: Bürgeramt clerks primarily speak German. If your German is limited, consider bringing a German-speaking friend. However, the process is mostly filling out forms, so basic communication is usually sufficient.
Once you have completed your registration, several important things happen:
You receive this document immediately at the appointment. Keep it in a safe place. You will need it to open a bank account, sign insurance contracts, and for various administrative processes. If you lose it, you can request a replacement for a small fee.
Your 11-digit tax ID will be sent to your registered address by postal mail, usually within 2–4 weeks after your Anmeldung. This ID is permanent and stays the same even if you move within Germany. You will need to give it to your employer so they can process your payroll correctly.
With your Meldebescheinigung, you can now open a full German bank account. While services like N26 or Wise allow remote account opening, traditional banks (Deutsche Bank, Sparkasse, Commerzbank) require the Meldebescheinigung.
If you have not yet enrolled in German health insurance, the Anmeldung makes this possible. Public health insurers (like TK, AOK, or Barmer) require your registered address.
This is the most common frustration. Berlin's Bürgeramt offices are notoriously overbooked. Try checking the booking portal at different times of day, try offices in outer districts, and be persistent. Cancellation slots appear regularly.
Without this document, the Bürgeramt will not process your registration. If your landlord has not provided it, request it in writing. Landlords are legally required to provide this form. If you are subletting, the main tenant must provide it (with the landlord's consent).
If you register more than 14 days after moving in, you may face a fine of up to 1,000 EUR. In practice, small delays are usually tolerated, but do not wait longer than necessary.
Hotels and hostels generally cannot provide a Wohnungsgeberbestätigung for Anmeldung purposes. You need a proper rental contract or a landlord who confirms your residence. This is one of the key advantages of renting with ASAP Living – you can register immediately.
